メル・ラモス（1935-）: アメリカ、カリフォルニア州サクラメントに生まれ、1954-58年サクラメント州立大学で美術、美術史を学ぶ。初期には抽象表現主義の影響を受けていたが、1961年頃から「バットマン」「ワンダー・ウーマン」といった漫画を題材とし、西海岸におけるポップ・アートの旗手となる。1963年にローレンス・アロウェイ企画の「6人の画家とオブジェ」展がロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館で開かれた際、同美術館にて同時開催された西海岸の作家による展覧会「もう6人」に出品。1964年、ニューヨークのビアンキーニ・ギャラリーで初個展。ピンナップからとられた肉感的な女性の裸体を、大量生産される商品やカバなどの動物と一緒に描く作品で知られる。後にはアングルやモディリアーニらの美術史上の作品を引用し、ピンナップと融合したヌードを発表している。

Mel RAMOS（1935-）: Born in Sacramento, California. Studied art and art history at Sacramento State College. Ramos started out under the influence of Abstract Expressionism, but from around 1961 began using themes on comic book characters such as 'Batman' and 'Wonder Woman', making him a standard-bearer of Pop Art on the West Coast. His paintings were included in the "Six More" exhibition featuring West Coast artists and held simultaneously at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1963 with the "Six Painters and the Object" exhibition curated by Lawrence Alloway. His first solo exhibition was held at the Bianchini Gallery in New York in 1964. He specialized in paintings of sensuous nudes posing with commercial items or with animals such as a hippopotamus. Later, he incorporated quotes from well-known paintings by Ingres and Modigliani, combining elements of the nude and the pin-up.
