ロイ・リキテンスタイン（1923-1997）: アメリカの画家、版画家。ニューヨーク生まれ。1939年アート・スチューデンツ・リーグで学ぶ。49年オハイオ州立大学で修士号取得。51年より商業デザイナーとして働く。57年頃から抽象表現主義的な絵画を制作。61年、漫画の一コマを拡大した油彩画を発表し、注目を集める。主に赤・青・黄の原色のみを使いながら、太く明快な輪郭線と、印刷物の網点を模したドットで画面を構成する独自の作風を確立し、ポップ・アートの立役者となった。漫画や日用品をモティーフとする一方で、ピカソら近現代の巨匠たちの名画、キュビスムやアール・デコなどの時代様式、静物や風景などの伝統的画題を引用して、自身のポップな作風に翻案した絵画シリーズを、62年から80年代に至るまで次々と展開した。

Roy LICHTENSTEIN（1923-1997）: American painter and printmaker. Born in New York. Studied at the Art Students League in 1939, and earned Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1949. Took jobs as a commercial artist from 1951. Produced abstract expressionist paintings from around 1957. In 1961, Lichtenstein’s painting of a single comic strip frame was exhibited and drew attention. Using mainly the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue to mimic the thick outlines and color dots of printed matter, established his own style and became a leading figure of the Pop Art movement. From 1962 through the 1980s, while taking up themes based on comic strips and common everyday objects, Lichtenstein also did a series of paintings quoting, but adapting to his own Pop style, motifs of traditional still life and landscape paintings, paintings in Cubist and Art Déco style, and well-known masterpieces of modern and contemporary art by Picasso and other artists.
