ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ（1925-2008）: 画家、彫刻家。テキサス州ポート・アーサー生まれ。テキサス大学で薬理学を学び、海軍に従軍後、1946年カンザス・シティ美術学校に入学。パリのアカデミー・ジュリアン留学を経て49年卒業。その後ブラック・マウンテン・カレッジで学びジョゼフ・アルバースに師事。同校でマース・カニンガムやジョン・ケージと出会う。表現主義的な色彩とコラージュや日常のオブジェをカンヴァスに統合させた作品は、「コンバイン・ペインティング」と呼ばれ、伝統的な絵画と彫刻の境界を壊し、当時独占的だった抽象表現主義とは異なる新たな活路を示す。63年ニューヨークのユダヤ美術館で最初の回顧展。64年ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレで国際大賞受賞。67年ビリー・クルヴァーと「芸術と技術の実験(E.A.T.)」を立ち上げる。

Robert RAUSCHENBERG（1925-2008）: Painter and sculptor. Born in Port Arthur, Texas. Studied pharmacology at the University of Texas. In 1946, after having served in the Navy, Rauschenberg enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute. Rauschenberg traveled to Paris to study at Académie Julian, and then graduated in 1949. Following that, he studied with Josef Albers at Black Mountain College, where he met Merce Cunningham and John Cage. His 'Combines' paintings that used expressionist colors with collages or application of everyday objects to the canvas, broke the boundaries between traditional paintings and sculpture and opened a new path away from the Abstract Expressionism that held sway at the time. Rauschenberg’s first retrospective exhibition was held in 1963 at The Jewish Museum, New York. In 1964, he won the International Prize at the Venice Biennale. In 1967, with Billy Klüver, he launched Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.).
