アンディ・ウォーホル（1928-1987）: アメリカ、ペンシルヴェニア州ピッツバーグでスロヴァキアからの移民の家庭に生まれる。49年カーネギー工科大学を卒業後、ニューヨークで商業デザイナーとなる。52年同市のヒューゴ・ギャラリーで最初の個展を開催。62年よりキャンベル・スープ缶などの商品や、マリリン・モンローら著名人の肖像写真、新聞における悲惨な事故の報道写真といった大衆社会に流布するイメージをシルクスクリーンの技法で反復する作風で、ポップ・アートの旗手となった。63年にアトリエ「ファクトリー」を構え、65年頃から映画制作に専念する。68年の銃撃事件を転機として再び絵画に戻り、70年代は政界や芸能界の有名人の肖像を制作、80年代には表現主義的な絵画も描いた。

Andy WARHOL（1928-1987）: Born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Slovakian immigrants. After graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949, became a commercial designer in New York. In 1952, the Hugo Gallery in New York presented Warhol’s first solo exhibition. Starting from 1962, Warhol became a standard bearer of Pop Art, making stencil and silkscreen images of repetitions of soup cans and other household commodities, photos of disasters mass circulated in the press, and portraits of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe. He set up The Factory, his New York studio, in 1963 and concentrated on making films from around 1965. In 1968, after having been shot, he went back to painting. In the 1970s he produced portraits of major political figures and celebrities, and in the 1980s he also did paintings in a neo-Expressionist style.
