Initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions.

　As a first step toward contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society, we seek to achieve Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon neutrality for our three main facilities, TBS Broadcast Center, Akasaka Sacas Cultural Facility (TBS Akasaka ACT Theater, TBS Akasaka Blitz Studio, and Sacas Square), and TBS Midoriyama Studio in FY2023. As a result, nearly 70% of TBS TV’s regular programs will be recorded in studios or broadcast live with zero CO2 emissions.

　By FY2021, TBS achieved a 42% reduction in CO2 emissions at the Broadcast Center (which functions as both the company headquarter and studios) and buildings in the Akasaka Sacas Cultural Facility, compared to the average emissions during 2002-2004, and a 25% reduction compared to FY2015.

　The primary measures for reducing CO2 emissions from the Broadcast Center are saving electricity by updating equipment, such as the conversion of studio lighting to LEDs, which has reduced electricity consumption by approximately 30%. The use of inverters for heating and cooling systems for the entire building and the reduction of operational hours are also contributing to the reduction of electricity consumption.

　Equipment upgrades are planned for the biggest studios in the Broadcast Center, Studio A and Studio B, with the conversion to LED lighting and other measures expected to reduce electricity consumption. Furthermore, from the perspective of our business continuity plan (BCP), i.e. the responsibility of a news organization to continue broadcasting even during power outages and disasters, we have our own in-house power generation system (CGS) in the basement of our headquarters. Extending the duration of the shutdown at night from the current 2 and a half hours to 5 hours would reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 200 t per year.

　In addition to further reducing emissions and using renewable energy at the TBS Broadcast Center, we will begin calculating Scope 3 CO2 emissions. Each company within the Group is also making efforts to calculate and reduce its CO2 emissions.
