We are pleased to present the exhibition “Michelangelo Buonarroti—The Making of a Genius and the 500th Anniversary of the Sistine Chapel.”
Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), master of the Italian Renaissance. In his time, he was called, “the divine one.” This exhibition traces Michelangelo’s career and creative influences through artworks and personal papers from the master’s collection at the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, a collection handed down in the Buonarroti family through many generations. Included is Michelangelo’s earliest sculpted work, the Madonna of the Stairs, a marble relief he carved at about the age of fifteen. The current exhibition represents the first occasion in history when the work—a treasure rarely allowed to leave the Casa Buonarroti—is being lent out for such a long period. Through a total of 60 items, including over 30 of Michelangelo’s drawings, the exhibition affords a glimpse into the creative processes of one of the greatest artists of all time. By furthermore displaying his letters and notes alongside his artworks, it reveals the human aspect of this master artist and the anguish he experienced in his creation of art.
