Tomoe's KIMINO in episode 8 is gorgeous - with billowing-sleeves - and very fitting for the episode's theme: GEISHA.

Take a close look at the motifs on her kimono... do you see the seaside palm trees and colonial style resort villas???

Many KIMONOs from the Taisho-era (1912-1926) are a strange mix of East and West, reflecting Japanese people's longing for Western culture.

The OBI - made in the same period - is like a Kandinsky* painting. [*Wassily Kandinsky was an influential Russian painter and art theorist, said to be the creator of the first modern abstract paintings.]

Isn't it a super avant-garde design!???

Was the TSUKIJI episode yummy enough?

Tomoe's KIMONO this week (episode 4) had big, bold red dots on a light-blue background - representing the lively colorful Tsukiji fish-market.

This is an example of a Meisen Kimono which was hugely popular among women from the end of the Taisho era to early Showa (1920-1940).

Meisen kimono fabric is woven in a special way. After the fabric is partly woven, it's removed from the loom and a stencil is used to print the pattern on the warps (the vertical threads). When the printing is done, the real weft (the horizontal threads) is woven, while the interim weft is untied. This process is called "Hogushi".
The characteristics of Hogushi fabric are lightness and durability. Because the printing is done on the warp before final weaving, the patterns end up being soft and blurred, though the colors are bold and vivid.

With its modern and stylish patterns, this was trendy and fashionable fabric for daily-wear kimonos women wore to Ginza, at the end of Taisho era.

What do you think of the Haori coat, with citrus fruit and parrots - cute, isn't it?

The motif of Tomoe's kimono in episode3 was a Rose.

From the end of the Taisho period to early Showa (1920-1945) - the Rose pattern was hugely popular among girl students.

Called Taisho-Romanticism, It gained popularity, as the trend of art nouveau - gorgeous designs of flowers like Rose and Lilies - imported from Wetsftern countries, came into style.

We can find the flower patterns not only in the KIMONO, but also OBI (Japanese traditional sash ) and HAN-ERI (Japanese traditional collar made for decoration and hygiene).

And the OBI SELECT in this episode is the art Deco geometric pattern.

Please check out the OBI carefully, and you might something. Can you find it?
ANSWER: the pattern is designed from tall buildings in a metropolitan city.
The combination made Tomoe look modern!

Don't miss next episode's Komono select!

Ever heard of "Mallorca OMESHI"?

WASABI House OWNER Tomoe Shinohara's ANTIQUE KIMONO-look is something to look out for in each episode of "Find the WASABI!" In episode 2, she adorns herself in the "Mallorca OMESHI" style, known for its gorgeous textiles woven with gold and silver yarns.

Mallorca OMESHI is a very precious style of KIMONO, produced during a limited time, between 1959 and 1963, and woven only in Toka-machi in Niigata-pref.

Why Mallorca? - The name comes from the gorgeous earthenware produced in the Middle Ages in Italy and Spain!

And for "OBI" (Japanese traditional sash), she's chosen a design with sunflowers. It's a freezing cold winter in Japan, but Tomoe hopes to deliver a sense of cozy warmth through your imagination, despite the winter chill.

Don't miss the next episode's KIMONO-select !
