Mozambique Diary June 22 - June 28, 2003
|
On operations:
Namanda is a village in Ile District in Zambezia Province. An area of about 7.000 square meters is suspected mined. The minefield is behind three shops; Frelimo soldiers mined the area as a defensive measure from Renamo soldiers' sabotage of the shops. An accident has happened during the war when a boy stepped on an anti-personnel mine. It is a village with approximately 5.000 people, they want to re-open the shops and use the land for agriculture as well as the road that passes through the shops.
The life in general
My name is Nelito Augusto; I'm twenty-seven years old, single and have a child. My child is still young to go to school.
Before I joined HALO I was a mechanical of motorbike, I like riding bikes.
I joined to HALO TRUST in 31 January 2001 and since that time till now I'm a deminer, I learned to this task very well and I'm enjoying it.
Personally this is my first job I have had that's why I can't say a lot of good or bad things but everything I can say is that I have my salary at the end of every month, and with that that money I can feed my family, buy cloth and do a lot of things.
Talking about the work we have done this week especially to myself, I can do 30 to 35m per day when is not raining, because raining time is not easily to work so this week was raining during the morning time and this make our job slower, we were doing about 20 to 25 m per day.
My team and myself are still felling so much about the accident that happened to our colleague called Mario Rito.
My relationship with my friends is the best we can have so some time we use to confirm that when somebody is not feeling well.
Personally we live like a big family.
I wish that HALO TRUST will stay in Mozambique until the last mine is away from the ground.
