Mozambique Diary

On operations:
Team 9 is working in Morrumbala District of Zambezia Province, Zambezia is one of the central Province of Mozambique, the task name is Megaza South. The mined area is the extent cleared by the HALO Trust in year 2000. The government troops had positioned bankers and layed mines in order to defend the administration post and the village from Renamo rebels attacks.
We doing very well in this task so far we did not have any problem that made us stop working, we hope to finishes this task and give to the locals so they can use the land.
The life in general
My name is Aberto Juizo Simital, I’m 31 years old, I have three children, they all go to school except the last born he is still very young. I was born in Zambezia Province, I live in Quelimane with my wife and children, Quelimane is the capital city of Zambezia.
Before I joined The HALO Trust I was in the army, I was recruited in Zambezia then was sent to Maputo for military training, after sometimes in Maputo I went to Zimbabwe for further military training. When the war finished I was demobilised and I new I had to arrange a job because the money we received from the army wouldn’t last for long period. After seven months I joined HALO Trust, it was in 20th August 1995, I was trained as deminer, after sometime was appointed to assistant supervisor post. Eight months ago I was promoted to a supervisor post. I love the job although it not easy I’m doing my best to be promoted once more.
With the money I earn I pay school fees of my children, buy food cloth for me and my family, I’m saving some money in order to continuing my studies at the university in the future.
The relationship with my colleagues and local population is very good the only thing I have to complain the long period I stay in the field away from my family, when my neighbours ask me when I’m in town how do I succeed to stay so long time in the bush I just say “such as a life”.
