Cambodia Diary December 8, 2001
|
This week, it has little bit cold at night and hot during the day times in the act of the weather is a bit swapped. The north wind was blowing proceeding slowly. The water in rice fields, ponds and streams had evaporated. The soil is dry, that is good condition for vehicles and bush cutter can access to mine field, that it might not be got stuck or any affected to deming operation as before and demining team has deployed as usual to all mine sites.
A 35 years old-deminer Lem Penh in section No 19 and Ins 584. He got married with 3 children, and all of them are students in Svay Leu primary school. His motherland is in Svay Leu Village, Svay Leu Commune, Svay Leu District and Siem Reap Province. He has jointed with HALO on 10th September 1998. Since he worked for the HALO trust, he found more than 50 of anti personal mines and this week he found 2 Uxos such as (RPG2, 82mm Mortar). That was good because last week he did not get any thing, but he just only got a lot of metal and spent a lot of time for excavating.
For 3 years as a staff of The HALO Cambodia, Lem Penh had afforded money to build a new house with a radio and one television set and 2 hectares of rice field for his family to do cultivation, if The Halo Trust Cambodia contract will be finished. Now his family living is even better than before, " It is different life from previous time ", he said. Before he was a district military force in battalion No 367 of Svay Leu district. At that time he was sent by his commander to everywhere (Preah Vihea, Kampong Thom Province) for fighting and laying mine against Khmer Rouge. Many years of war, he did nothing for his family and leaves them to live in a very difficult with threatening and poverty stricken what it were remorse his retaining. He wishes to have a family holiday in Phnom Penh and Sihanouk Ville (seaside) in one day if it’s possible, because his family and him have never been there. He’s hopeful what he has planed is coming, it might be during Khmer New Year celebration, he said.
Oh! If he do it prosperously what it is exciting of his life.
Best regards,
Lem Penh,
Deminer
