October 13, 2001

In this week, due to had some rainfall at night time and drizzling in the morning just for 1 or 2 hours and after that, demining team carried on their work as usual till 3 o’clock. However, we can deploy (New Holland I) bush cutter to this minefield for increasing the speed of manually clearance.

Deminers in Tuol Prasat IV cleared an average 35 sqm/lane/day. In this weekend after demining day, The team got SOP refresher from demining supervisor for 30 minutes and gave some advise about general discipline.

A deminer named Cheam Oun, 36 years old. He is from Pursat province. Previous job he served as a soldier at Cambodia Thai Border during the State of Cambodian government. So far he got married with four children, but 3 children are living with their grand parents. In 1992, he had opportunity to joint with Halo in Pursat Province. And at the present, he has been working for The Halo Trust as deputy section commander in section 16th and insurance number (30). He has found more than 170 anti-personal mines and many UXOs. In this week, he found a mine (Type MBV78A1) and one UXO (Type RPG2). “When I found mines or UXOs my feeling is normal and safe, I’m very happy indeed because I has always followed The Halo SOP” He said. Now, he would like to thank to The Halo Trust that gave him a good job as deminer and got reasonably paid and made his life even better than before, but just enough for supporting to his family, because all the money has shared to his old parent too.

Best regards
