Angola Diary
15th - 21th September 2003

My name is Evagelista Fimanekeny, I am Kwanhama by tribe. I was born on 26th March 1967 in Evale, Cunene Province. My father is Armaldo, my mother's name is Margarida Ndelipa . I have a grade 12 education with a certificate in education. From 1990 to 1998, I had been teaching Portuguese at a primary school in Ondjiva which I very much enjoyed. In 1999 MAG established itself in Cunene and in the same year I offered to resign because of the very insufficient income I was getting. I tried to ask advice from my parents to see what they felt about this demining job. It wasn't easy for them either to decide because of the dangerous nature of mines. I took my own decision to take up the job to contribute to the clearance of mines so as to help my own people. I bore in mind that MAG will teach me safe procedures to avoid mine accidents, so I decided to join MAG.

I am a mother of three kids which I support alone. My parents are too old to work and fend for themselves so I support them too. I would like to thank the Japanese Broadcasting System for supporting my team. However, the funding needs to be increased to cope with the operational demands. A lot needs to be done to improve our operations and this needs money. MAG has done a lot in this province so it needs to be supported.
