Angola Diary
25th August - 1st September 2003

Before I started working as a driver for MAG I worked at the Ministry of Social Assistance as a liaison worker. This ministry works with NGOs that work with health and other things. I enjoyed this work, but I also enjoy working for MAG.

I am from Benguela Province in the west of Angola. In 2000 I came to visit my family in Cunene, and during this time I applied for a job to be a driver at MAG. I was successful, and since then have been the driver for the Mine Action Team. My favourite vehicle we have at the moment is the Bedford Truck, because this vehicle is strong and stable to drive. Soon we will get delivery of a new Toyota Landcruiser which will be good. The old vehicles we are using at the moment are often breaking down. This causes many problems and delays and we spend a lot of time fixing the vehicles.

At the moment we are still camping in Cuvelai. This is a small place with not much recreation activities. It is good to return to Ondjiva after living out here for some time. During the break period I work on my house in Ondjiva. My wife is now living in Ondjiva. I hope from working for MAG I am able to help my children get education and get good jobs.

MAG needs to get more equipment such as new boots, radios and vehicles to improve the demining situation. But now there is peace in Angola there is a chance to get more funds. We thank all the donors who help us.
