Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction written by Daniel Keyes in 1958. It's original story is about Charlie Gordon, a man in his thirties with mental disability. Mr Yamashita plays this mentally challenged man with the name Shiratori Sakuto.

The vivid memories of Sakuto's childhood disturb him greatly and he has longed for people to like him including his mother. He thinks that if he is smart, people would want to be his friends.

However, getting smart brings much problems and cruel truth as Sakuto begins to understand the human nature.

In the interview posted on this official website, we come to know that Mr Yamashita has visited a facility for mentally handicapped so as to have a better understanding of their life and inner feeling. It is evidenced that he really puts in tremendous effort for this role and many viewers have sent him much compliments.

In my opinion, there is still room for improvement in Mr Yamashita's acting. His idol's aura is far too strong which affects his playing of this character who is suffering from phenylketonuria.

But we viewers understand the difficulty in playing this complex role as the actor is actually playing two persons instead of one (the difference in character before and after the brain surgery).

Please keep up the good work, Yamashita-san!
