Georgia Diary
January 30, 2004

The winter has been kind to us. It is the end of January but the weather is warm like the Spring. This is very good for us as we can work without interruption and continue clearing our land of all dangerous items because it is so painful to hear about accidents, especially those that have happened recently.

I do not know how to prevent them more than we already do ... but children remain children: always curious, trying to dismantle everything that they find. I am talking about an accident that happened on 1 January in the Sukhumi region when schoolchildren found some dangerous items and burnt them. As a result of this, two of them are dead and the third one is in hospital. Whenever we hear such stories we feel guilty although we do our best to clean our land and to prevent such accidents by warning children every day.

Do the people who create bombs, mines, and other dangerous items have hearts?

I think there is no aim in the world that deserves one child's life.
