Georgia Diary
December 19, 2003

Every morning before sunrise the silence around the airport is disturbed by the noise of the huge and in some way beautiful heavy plant. This is a way of life and it is not only at the airport but for the whole of Abkhazia. Behind them is the hope to bring our country to life again. Just imagine we are trying to clean almost every little piece of our land. It will become as beautiful as before. And when our land is free of mines a lot of tourists from many countries will come for sightseeing and to visit our historical monuments. Life teaches us to do many things. Not only tourists but local people can use the cleared areas for their private use such as kitchen gardens, maize fields and so on. I can remember one particular time from my working day. There was a "grave of broken airplanes" at the airport where there were eight anti-personnel mines found and destroyed by the deminers of the Mechanical team. Now this territory is used by a veteran of aviation where he plants potatoes. Today everyone is doing what he can. Some are digging potatoes out of the ground and others are getting mines out of the ground and with this aim every deminer comes to work in the minefield.
