Georgia Diary

I know that our job must be done very carefully and that's why we are trying to clean every piece of land. It takes a lot of time and sometimes I am like an impatient child who cannot wait till it happens, so much do I want our country to be free of mines and the debris of war. I would like to erase from memory everything that reminds us of war, but I cannot yet because mines are everywhere.

A few days ago another mine was found on the beach of Ochamchira like the one a few years ago in Sukhum. The mine was brought by the river into the sea and washed on to the beach. I know that our country is still full of mines yet when I hear about such events where people do not expect them at all, it makes me feel so nervous. Children often go to the beach looking for cockle-shells or just to play and tragedy can be so close. Because there are no HALO signs and they don't expect anything dangerous but…

Luckily, we do have a very good mine awareness team which informs children and adults about such dangers which can be anywhere - even at the seaside. And continuing to work in this way - deminers clearing the land of mines, the Crusher inspecting mine contaminated soil, the EOD team finding and destroying unexploded ordnance, the MA team informing and warning people about existing danger, I think we will achieve good results!
