Georgia Diary October 25, 2003
|
The summer flew by. This year the autumn started with bad weather and a cyclone which came from the North. Only a few days agow the peaks of the Caucasus mountains were bright with the sun shining, now they are clouded by a dense haze. A strong wind and thunderstorms fell upon the towns, villages and fields of Abkhazia. The water level of the river Kodor which flows beside our minefield increased by 3 metres causing it's banks to flood. The riverside houses and the main road M27 were also flooded. All our mechanical vehicles and the Crusher are silent and demining is suspended.
The water is rising and it is only now that we realise the elements are a terrible power. We people, the kings of nature, who can travel into space, dig canals, change the course of rivers and invent clever machines (like the Crusher) can do nothing to prevent it.
