Georgia Diary September 26, 2003

It is always sad when summer fades away, but here in Abkhazia we don't feel it till October. The weather is, as I said before, reminiscent of velvet, warm and soft, and we are all in a mellow mood. Only the absence of tourists and the children starting the school term remind us that autumn has come.
The sea looks attractive but the water is already cold. However there are still some who swim in the sea at this time of year: we call them walruses. Most of the trees are evergreen; only the maples and some other trees covered with their yellow "garments" are distinguished as if touched accidentally by the brush of a painter.
And among the green leaves of the vines you can see big bunches of ripe grapes. The time for wine-making is approaching when almost every person in Abkhazia makes his own wine. Some people make more than a few hundred litres and are very proud of it because every master of the house must have his own wine to offer guests and there should be enough till next autumn. Some people are preparing weddings because autumn and winter is the time for weddings here.
Our land gives us so much: the corn will ripen soon, and various fruits, and vegetables (if you are not lazy and can survive cultivating them) - that's why we have to do our best in order to clear it as soon as possible.
