Georgia Diary September 19, 2003
|
It is the middle of September and here in Abkhazia it is perhaps the best time of the year to my mind. We call this the "velvet season", because that terrible heat is not tormenting us any more and the weather is like velvet - soft and warm. The week of unceasing rain has passed and it seems as though everything has had a second birth and we work with new strength.
It was not an easy summer: soil, soil… thousands of cubic metres of mined soil revolving inside the Crusher with the intermittent volcano sounds of exploding anti-personnel mines.
On the first of September this year so many children went to school for the first time - and among them many of our workers' children: symbolising life with flowers in their hands and smiles on their faces; and the terrible sounds of war are in the past. It doesn't mean that we have forgotten it but it means that we think to the future and that we must make this future beautiful for our children!
