Georgia Diary
January 24, 2003

We have come back to work after the long holidays and are trying to concentrate on demining. We were celebrating the New Year so you probably understand why we are "trying to concentrate".

Physically we are ready to start work on the minefields but our minds are still at home... on the sofa... with the newspapers.. .with breakfasts and double-dinners... at the table full of delicious food and, glass of red wine in hand, long toasts ("philosophical" speeches are common for men in the Caucasus) with wishes of happiness, health, prosperity, to find a wife, a husband, a treasure.

My children were glad to see me doing nothing all holidays and ready to answer all their questions about mine clearance. Is it dangerous? Is it hard? Are you in charge on the minefield? How many mines did you find? What do you do when you clear all the mines? Is it possible to clear the whole planet?

It is great for a period to sleep late and have a completely disorganised day. It even makes you miss work because you make so many plans and think of a lot of brilliant ideas during that period.
