Georgia Diary
April 22 - 26, 2002

This month we destroyed 6 anti-personnel mines. Every mine is a small triumph for us and for our people who live nearby. We sift about 100m3 of mine contaminated soil per day but springtime in Abkhazia is not the best season as it rains a lot. Over the last ten years we have noticed some change in our climate which is disappointing. We remember the time when there was no snow in wintertime and most days of the year were sunny. In 1911 there was 2m of snow but that was extraordinary even for here. Now spring is just like a bridge from winter into summer.

We have heard about the new method of dog mineclearance which is starting here and we are all very interested because it is something unusual. Most of our staff love animals and would like to work with dogs. One of our Crusher operators was a veterinary before he was a deminer and he is waiting for dog mineclearance to start more than anyone else. He says that it is most rewarding when you know how to help a dog or a cow when others can only standby and watch.
