Georgia Diary February 18 - 22, 2002
|
The weather has begun to improve. The days are warmer and sunnier after the long winter days. Some regions of Russia which borders Abkhazia has had huge flooding, especially in the Krasnodar region. In spite of this, there has been no threat of flooding in Abkhazia, because the rivers in Abkhazia run into the sea. Abkhazia has no plains, just mountains and sea.
Our team has cleared about 300m3 of contaminated soil. This is a very good result for the winter period.
There is a water shortage in Sukhumi (capital of Abkhazia) until 01 March because of the numerous breakages in the water pump stations and water pipes. This is a great problem for the city. NGOs like ICRC and others decided to solve the problem by asking HALO Trust to clear the area around the water stations of landmines. Because of the numerous pipes and different electric cables around the station it was decided to conduct manual mineclearance. This will take more time but it will make them secure for repairing and refurbishing. After an accurate check of the area by our supervisor and myself we have decided to use the VOLVO, which will cope with this work faster. I think at the beginning of next week I shall be able to give a report on our work to the donors, who come every day to find out how we are getting on. We will do our part of the work and then they will be able to get on with the repair work to the pipes.
