Georgia Diary January 28 - February 3, 2002
|
On Monday, 28 January we had very good weather for continuing our work. The mine contaminated soil which we were using, was very dry. It is a great pleasure to deal with such dry soil.
On Tuesday, in the middle of our working day, the TEREX had a flat tyre therefore we had to stop our work for a while. Our mechanic quickly solved that problem. He is located in his workshop at the Head Office and frequently goes to visit the minefields where the mechanical teams are working in case they have any technical problems. If he can not repair the problem on the spot the machine is moved to the workshop for repair.
There is a bridge through the river Gumista not far from the place we are working. We can see everything that is going on at the bridge and around it.
Early Wednesday morning we saw a small truck stop on the bridge. The driver got out of his vehicle and began looking at the river from the bridge. Some time later the driver drove down to the river and drove the vehicle into the river. In the middle of the river the truck began sinking. The driver got out of the truck and began screaming for help. It was such a wild scream that even the most famous rock singers would have envied him. As we found out later he wanted to get to an island, which is located in the middle of the river, to collect some wood which had been carried downriver by floods.
I told him to record his voice and send it to a music studio. He thought this a good joke but I really thought he had talent.
I know another story about that island. There are a lot of wild birds on that island and that attracts many hunters. We can hear shooting all the time from it, as in a battlefield. One of the hunters lives not far from us. He winged a duck recently. He wandered around for three days with the duck boasting that he wings a duck every day.
Our team found one mine and an ordnance PG-7 this week.
