Georgia Diary
November 4, 2001

This week has passed without special surprises. The weather is as usual. It rains often and because of that we can not work.

Rising time is 5.30 every morning, at 6.30 we are already in the office, cause it takes one hour to prepare the technique and the equipment before the work starts. In the morning everybody knows about the plans for the whole day, cause after the working day all the details and plans for the next day are confirmed.

At 8.00 after the radio check the minefields begin working.
There are two very important rules, which must be strictly kept by field officers before the working day: The first one is radio check.
The second one is medical assistance.
Without these two things mineclearance is impossible.
Though, as far as I remember, there have not been mine accidents with injuries since the time I work for HALO. We have an ambulance and medical staff in every minefield with all necessary equipment.

There are two medics in my team: Fatima Khondru-Oglu and Saida Tirkba. They both are very experienced. They have been working for HALO for 3 years. They used to work in different hospitals in Abkhazia before HALO. Senior medic Larissa Mazlum-ogli very often (every week) conducting medical training courses how to render First Aid in case of emergency. I know with no doubt that medics will do everything properly in case of a mine accident.

Soon medical team will be provided by a new vehicle. Fatima Khondru-ogli thinks that lots of things depend on a good ambulance.

Ali Makhmatkhanov,
Crusher Field Officer
